Local MP and Minister for Skills, Apprenticeships and Higher Education, Robert Halfon, has announced his plans to offer every child and young person in Harlow and across the country invaluable careers education, advice and guidance to ensure every student can climb the ladder of opportunity.
Earlier this week, Prime Minister Rishi Sunak laid out his five priorities to build a better Britain, including setting out plans to ensure children and young people leave school with the skills they need to access better-paid and high-quality jobs.
Building on this, Skills Minister Robert Halfon has announced new legislation which will expose primary aged children to careers education and improve the quality of careers education at all levels. The scheme will be rolled out in 55 of the most disadvantaged areas in the country and will be backed by £2.6 million.
For the first time ever, primary aged children will take part in careers education to open their eyes to the world of future job possibilities whilst challenging stereotypes and boosting aspirations. Meanwhile, young people will also benefit from a new law which will ensure they have access to careers guidance covering every possible progression route, including technical vocations and academic pathways.
Commenting on the announcement, Mr Halfon said, “To deliver the future workforce that this country needs, it is essential that careers advice and work experience helps young people from all backgrounds to climb the ladder of opportunity.
“The changes we are making to boost our careers programme will raise ambitions from an early age for thousands of children in primary schools across the country, while providing opportunities to unlock talent, think about skills, engage with employers and discover different workplaces.”
