I was delighted to join the House of Lords Communications and Digital Committee this morning to discuss the importance of creative skills.
I told the Committee that “creative skills are as important as STEM skills” with 88% of employers saying they find it hard to recruit highly-skilled individuals.
The Department for Education is taking action through the Unit for Future Skills & Local Skills Improvement Plans (LSIPs) to tackle these challenges. Furthermore, the Government is investing in a pipeline of talent for creative skills working with industry through:
✅new T-Levels in Craft & Design & Media, Broadcast & Production from 2023
✅Skills Bootcamps
✅new Digital and Creative Design HTQs by 2025
✅56 Apprenticeships in digital skills
As well as skills, I told the Committee that improving Careers Education is a critical rung on the Ladder of Opportunity 🪜🌟
⬆️We must increase work experience for pupils beginning earlier in primary schools
✅We must also ensure that Careers Education also focuses on technical education & promotes skills by strengthening the Baker Clause
