The Prime Minister has announced that around 200,000 Ukraine refugees will be supported into Britain through a resettlement scheme as the Government extends their humanitarian route of resettlement.
The extension of the scheme means that British nationals and any person settled in the UK can bring over immediate Ukrainian family members and where family members of British nationals do not meet the usual eligibility criteria - but do pass all security checks - the Government will give them permission to enter the UK outside the usual rules for 12 months.
This comes on top of the total UK support during the current Ukraine crisis of £220 million, which includes £120 million of humanitarian aid as well as military support and unprecedented sanctions on Russia.
Prime Minister, Boris Johnson, said: “We'll make it easier for Ukrainians living in the UK to bring their relatives to our country, provide up to £220 million of emergency & humanitarian aid and have put 1,000 troops on standby to help the humanitarian response in neighbouring countries. The UK stands with Ukraine.”
Harlow’s MP, Robert Halfon, has welcomed the announcement: “I strongly welcome this announcement. I believe that we need to be as compassionate as possible and support Ukraine in every way we possibly can. This will allow over 200,000 Ukrainian refugees to come to the UK and the Government continues to stand shoulder to shoulder with the Ukrainian government.
“I am continuing to help residents stuck in Ukraine and in Harlow, the offers of kindness from residents are extraordinary. I am working with the Council to set up a donation point as soon as possible and I want to thank every resident who has offered to donate.
“Putin must fail and it remains incredible to see the strength and resolve of the Ukrainian people. We stand with Ukraine.”
