Following vigorous campaigning, Harlow MP, Robert Halfon, received a guarantee from the Prime Minister this afternoon that those MPs who shielding, self-isolating or sick due to the coronavirus, will be able to vote in Parliament by proxy.
Mr Halfon, who has been shielding for nearly 11 weeks, said: “I am really pleased that the Prime Minister has listened to and acted on my calls for MPs who are not able to attend Parliament, through no fault of their own, to be able to vote.
“The Prime Minister announced during Prime Minister's Questions that MPs who are not able to attend the House of Commons will be able to vote via proxy, meaning that another MP will vote on their behalf.
“I am very grateful to the MP for Hertford and Stortford, Julie Marson MP, who has agreed to be my proxy vote. She has worked behind the scenes to try and get this decision changed, ensuring all MPs are represented in Parliament.
“I share a constituency office with Julie, to save the taxpayer money, and she has been heavily involved in the plans for our brand-new Princess Alexandra hospital.
“I will continue to work hard for everyone in our town and represent Harlow and the villages in Parliament.”
